The trails at Bulkeley Hill Preserve are comprised of two loops (red and white) that run in parallel for some distance. Future trails are planned to take advantage of scenic overlooks.
Bulkeley Hill is a wonderful place to relax and observe. The terrain is mostly flat and relatively smooth: some sections have rocks or roots protruding. Wildlife is common, though not likely to be encountered by hikers. Bulkeley Hill Preserve is unique in that it is a watershed for two of Connecticut's rivers: the Eightmile and the Salmon. There is a small pond on the property where beavers have taken up residence.
The 130-acre parcel is for passive recreation only: no motorized vehicles, biking, hunting, fishing, trapping or camping.
Dogs on leash are welcome, but be considerate and clean up after your pet.
Bulkeley Hill Preserve abuts residential neighborhoods, with at least two apparent trails leading to private property, one of which is blocked by a barrier built of deadfall, to remind folks not to trespass: please be respectful of our neighbors.
The Colchester Land Trust owns and maintains Bulkeley Hill Preserve. From Colchester, take Route 16 to Bulkeley Hill Rd. (on left as you travel west on Rt 16). The preserve is about 1.5 miles from Rt 16, on the right, a couple hundred yards past the gabion (stone in mesh cages) wall. There is an 8 car parking lot.
