Description

Burr Pond State Park offers trails that wrap around Burr Pond with scenic views of the water. There is a boat launch at the northernmost point of the park on Burr Mountain Road, past the entrance to the park.

Visitors are allowed to swim in the designated areas - be sure to check the water quality before swimming! Multiple picnic areas with picnic tables are scattered around the beach and pond. 

The Walcott Trail passes through Burr Pond State Park and goes around the pond. 

Other Information

History

Gail Borden, discoverer of the process of milk preservation by evaporation and condensation, built the world's first condensed milk factory here in 1857. The new milk product proved to be of great value, particularly to the Union Army during the Civil War. Fire destroyed the mill in 1877. 

Rules

  • The park has bathrooms, a boat launch, picnic shelter (available for rental), and picnic tables. 
  • Please read the beach rules and swimming safety information before entering the park as well as current information on swimming water quality.
  • There are separate weekend/holiday and weekday parking fees for non-residents at Burr Pond State Park.
  • The park offers accessible bathrooms, parking, and picnic tables. 
  • The park is open from 8 am to sunset.
  • Pets on a leash are permitted in picnic areas and on hiking trails.
  • Pets are not allowed on the beach.

Plan Ahead and Prepare
Be prepared for emergencies. Pack extra clothing, food, and water and also a flashlight, first aid and repair kit, matches/fire starters, whistle, signaling mirror, and pocket knife.

Trailhead Information

From Route 8 North

Take Ehttps://www.cttrailfinder.com/trails/trail/walcottxit 46. At end of the ramp, take a left onto Pinewoods Road. Take a left at the light onto Winsted Road. Follow Winsted Road for approximately 1 mile and take a right at the light (turn is marked with a park sign) onto Burr Mountain Road. The park is 1 mile on the left.
