Hopemead State Park offers a relatively short and easy trail that leads to the shore of Gardner Lake.

Description

The main trail is a straight out and back on a historic roadway on the property. The trail is easy and relatively flat, passing between stonewalls, until it reaches the shorefront of Gardner Lake.  

A few minor informal side trails provide access from the adjacent private campground.

History

The State Park was established in 1955 through the purchase of the land from the Fuller and Eastman families with funds set aside by George Dudley Seymour. The property had been the farm of Solomon Gardner (son of the David Gardner for whom Gardner Lake is named) in the 1800s.

Rules

  • Swimming is not allowed in Hopemead State Park.

Trail Tips

Plan Ahead and Prepare
Avoid hypothermia, even in warm weather, by limiting your sweat and exposure to cold water. Bring warm and dry clothes in case the shivers set in.

Trailhead Information

From the junction of Route 82 and Route 163

From the junction of Route 82 and Route 163 in Bozrah, follow Route 82 west and immediately take the first right on Church Road. Follow Church Road to the end and turn right on Doyle Road. Follow 0.2 mile and turn left on Cottage Road. Follow Cottage Road 0.8 mile to the Park on the left.
