Description

Tyler Mill Preserve is a 1500-acre forest and field around Tamarac Swamp and a section of Muddy River. It contains many miles of multi-use trails. Hikers, please yield to horseback riders; mountain bikers, please yield to all other users!

Trails lead through deciduous and hemlock forest, agricultural fields, swamp and wetland areas, along traprock ridges (New England geologic formations created by volcanic and glacial activity), and even up to Moss Rock which offers a scenic view of the landscape including New Haven skyline. These unique habitats are home to many birds and wildlife species.

Emergency Markers

These numbered signs on the trails are a safety feature that has been incorporated into the trail system. Pay attention to these signs as you hike or ride the trails. If you have an accident or feel you are lost, they are your guide to tell others where you are located. The kiosk maps, the fire department and the police department all have copies of the numbered maps as a guide should anyone need to be found. The signs are about 8 feet up on the trees, and approximately 600 feet apart.

Other Information

History

The Quinnipiac tribe lived and hunted in this area, and it was settled by colonists in the 1600s. Eleazer Peck was one such settler who owned 100 acres in this area. He established a grist mill and a sawmill. In the 1810's, the mills became property of the Tyler family, who then later sold the property to New Haven Water Company. The town of Wallingford then purchased what is now Tyler Mill Preserve in 1977 from the New Haven Water Company with the help of the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

Hunting

Small game hunting is allowed by permit only in Tyler Mill Preserve from October through February on Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Thanksgiving Day. For your safety, do not use the trails on these days during hunting season.

During hunting season, wear bright colored clothing, even on properties that don’t allow hunting.  A fluorescent orange vest or hat is recommended. Please review Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection's Outdoor Safety Tips.

Trail Tips

Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
Stick to established trails and campsites. If there's no trail, try to walk on rock, gravel, or snow and spread out so that your group doesn't create a trail.
