Description

This beautiful, dog-friendly destination is known for scenic trails and abundant wildlife. It draws nature lovers with its chance encounters with deer, coyotes, and even bald eagles. Wide, mostly level paths ranging from 180 to 360 feet in elevation gain wind through rocky stretches and lead to lake views, making it a favorite for relaxed hikes and lakeside picnics. Many travelers mention meeting fellow hikers and enjoying peaceful surroundings. The area changes with the seasons, with new wildlife to spot each time.

Please adhere to posted park rules.  

  • Open 1/2 hour after sunrise to 1/2 hour before sunset.
  • Please do not disturb geological formations, plants, and animal life.
  • Swimming and fishing allowed only where posted. CT fishing license required.
  • Hunting, trapping, firearms, motorized vehicles, horses, and campfires prohibited.

Trailhead Information

From I-84 westbound

Take Exit 6 for CT-37/Fairfield and turn right onto North Street which turns into Padanaram Road. Continue north on CT-37 for 2.8 miles, then turn right onto Bear Mountain Road. After 0.3 miles, the park entrance is on the right.

From I-84 eastbound

Take Exit 5 and continue straight until Main Street, then turn left. Follow Main Street to cross under I-84, then turn right onto Golden Hill Road. Continue for one mile, then turn left onto Padanaram Road/CT-37 north. Follow CT-37 for 2.2 miles, then turn right onto Bear Mountain Road. After 0.3 miles, the park entrance is on the right.
