Near busy Route 32, the Lawton Trail offers a peaceful quietness along the Horton Cove portion of the Thames River. The trail is the result of an Eagle Scout project and is maintained by Troop 67. It is a serene area rich with history and nature as well as a peaceful escape to relax, connect with nature, and recharge. Horton Cove was named after the Houghton family, one of the first colonial settlers in the area. Visitors may see a variety of animals and birds in the cove and woodlands.
From the parking lot, follow the sign to the trailhead which is a short distance past the kiosk. Heading east, the access trail begins with a gradual descent and continues to the stone wall where the loop begins. After crossing the stone wall, take the trail to the north (left) up to where Stony Brook meets Horton Cove. Horton Cove is part of the tidal waters up to this point and so the water level varies. Turning southeast, the trail approaches a bench with a limited and picturesque vista of the cove. Continuing southward, the trail meanders through glacial erratics and mountain laurel. There are several small streams and quaggy areas to cross, each with a footbridge. Crossing a bog bridge, the trail takes a sharp turn to the west which is also the furthest point from the parking lot. Now heading up hill, a long abandoned retaining pond is visible. The trail continues upward to reach the ridge, with another bench at the top to rest. Continuing along the upper portion of the trail, one can hear the sounds of the nearby road and pass several signs of long forgotten development including old foundations and dirt mounds. Another gradual descent completes the loop at the stone wall. Head back up the access trail to the parking lot. Midway there is a bench with views of some of the cascading water from the brook.
Please respect the private property that borders the brook.
