Description

The 114-acre Lefebvre Reserve is much more than the tall canopy of second growth maple, oak and beech, and paddocks of delicate green ferns; it is also home to a dozen historic stone cairns and flocks of wild turkey, as well as mink and raccoons. It is within the Eightmile Wild & Scenic Watershed and the Lyme Forest Block Important Bird Area. The property lies between Devil's Hopyard State Park to the north and The Nature Conservancy's Burnham Brook Preserve to the south.

The Blue Trail is a 0.7-mile loop starting from the parking area.

The Red Trail is 0.9 miles long. It is a flat loop through the beautiful, forested areas of the property and both ends connect to the Blue Trail loop.

History

The Lefebvre Reserve was purchased by the Town of East Haddam and The Nature Conservancy from Edith Lefebvre, who was 100 years old at the time. Monetary assistance came from a grant from the State of Connecticut and a donation from East Haddam Land Trust.

Safety tips

  • Whenever you hike the trail alone, make sure someone knows where you are going.
  • Bow hunting is permitted at Lefebvre Reserve seasonally, by permit only. During hunting season, wear bright colored clothing, even on properties that don’t allow hunting.  A fluorescent orange vest or hat is recommended. Please review Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection's Outdoor Safety Tips.

Rules

  • Please stay on the marked trails. Do not take short cuts or make new paths.
  • All users are required to obtain permission before entering private property.  By staying on marked trails you will avoid inadvertently trespassing on private land or easements not open to the public.
  • No motorized vehicles are allowed on the trails.
  • Carry out everything you bring in. If you find litter on the trail, please pick it up and leave the trail in better shape than you found it.
  • Respect the natural environment. Don’t disturb animals, plants or habitats. Never feed the animals.
  • Keep pets on a leash or under your control at all times.
  • Don’t block access gates as this could prevent first responders or rescue vehicles from entering.
