Trails within the Northwest Park Trail system are all paved or stone dust and easily accessible for strollers, wheelchairs, etc. A 50-foot pier adjacent to the picnic pavilion provides an overlook of Union Pond. At a height of 18 feet above the water, it is a great place for observing the many birds that make the pond their home, such as hawks, blue heron, and ducks to name a few. In the fall, the observation deck will provide a spectacular view of New England color.
A feature in the center of Northwest Park is the Children’s Butterfly Garden. The garden was dedicated in 2003 and cared for of by volunteer Donald Kelsey.
The Northwest Park Boundless Playground is a barrier-free, 70% wheelchair accessible, developmentally appropriate, sensory rich, fun and safe playground for children of all abilities. The playground has an area designed for children ages 2-5 and an area designed for ages 5-12. The playground includes restrooms.
The park also features sand volleyball courts along the trail, 10 dog statues painted by local artists as a part of the Pups in the Park campaign, a little league sized and a full size baseball field, the Tiny Art Gallery located in Building 2 and Early Childhood Center in Building 1.
For nature lovers and hikers/walkers, the Union Pond Trail portion of the Hockanum River Linear Park extends into Northwest Park. The trail connects to the accessible stonedust/bituminous concrete Northwest Park Trail, which runs throughout the property linking the parks passive and active recreation areas.
The pier compliments the park’s pavilion and is available for rental by individuals and groups. Please note policies and rental fees on the Town website.
Fishing is allowed along the banks of the pond only. CT fishing license is required.
