This 22-acre parcel was donated to Earthplace in 2007. The land was set aside as an outcome of the development on Grassy Plains Road. It was once part of a larger parcel but was portioned off as an open space to be enjoyed by the public and protected from future development. Given the wide variety of landscape features on site, this passive recreation trail features a diversity of habitats and niches for wildlife viewing.
This property lies adjacent to Poplar Plains Brook and the surrounding floodplain. Development pressure of waterways throughout Connecticut have made larger floodplain areas a rarity. This floodplain is relatively undisturbed and has a well-developed sedge/forb understory, shrub layer, and tree canopy. Drinking water, food, and nesting material for wildlife are all available for use by a number of species.
Earthplace functions as a nature and wildlife sanctuary, as well as an education center. The main facility and sanctuary area is located nearby at 10 Woodside Lane, Westport, CT 06880.
The trailhead is at 18 Partrick Road Westport, CT 06880
