Description

Round Hill, Bladen’s Brook, and Russell Swamp trails create part of the Woodbridge Greenway Trails System. The more challenging Round Hill section starts on Route 63, and descends to the easier Bladen's Brook and Russel Swamp area, adjacent to the main parking lot. Here, the Naugatuck Trail (CT Blue Trail) splits, creating an East/West branch and a North/South branch at the intersection of Route 67 and Sanford Road. The Town of Bethany’s Bethany Farms Trail System is located to the north or, continuing on the Woodbridge Greenway, the Elderslie Preserve is located to the south.

If entering the Round Hill, Bladen's Brook and Russell Swamp from the parking lot, the fork just after the parking lot offers two options: straight ahead is the boardwalk where the hiker can follow the Blue Trail East along the Bladen’s Brook area and climb Round Hill. Here, the steep ascent moves to the top of the glacial drumlin rising some 650 feet above sea level with a breathtaking panorama extending all the way to Long Island Sound. This view is best when the leaves are off the trees. Alternatively, from the fork right past the parking lot, the Blue Trail North crosses over the bridge and Sanford Road, and eventually into Bethany.

Russell Swamp Tract, a 44-acre preserve located just north of where the Woodbridge Greenway Trail intersects Sanford Road, provides hikers with views of a stone embankment east of the Thomas Sanford house. It is thought that this location is where the world’s first friction matches were made. This trail crosses a steep area and leads to the Bethany Farms Trail System.
