Round Hill, Bladen’s Brook, and Russell Swamp trails create part of the Woodbridge Greenway Trails System. Coming from Rt. 63, you start on the more challenging Round Hill section, and then descend to the easier Bladen's Brook and Russel Swamp area, where you also find the main parking lot for this trail. At this location, near the intersection of Route 67 and Sanford Road, the Naugatuck Trail (CT Blue Trail) splits, creating an East/West branch and a North/South branch. From here, you can continue either into the Town of Bethany’s Bethany Farms Trail System to the north, or stay on the Woodbridge Greenway and continue to Elderslie Preserve to the south.
If entering the Round Hill, Bladen's Brook and Russell Swamp from the parking lot, the fork just after the parking lot offers two options: straight ahead is the boardwalk where the hiker can follow the Blue Trail East along the Bladen’s Brook area and climb Round Hill. Here the steep ascent moves to the top of the glacial drumlin rising some 650 feet above sea level with a breathtaking panorama extending all the way to Long Island Sound. This view is best when the leaves are off the trees.
Alternatively, from the fork right past the parking lot, the Blue Trail North crosses over the bridge and Sanford Road, and eventually into Bethany. Meandering through the trails on the Town-owned 44-acre Russell Swamp Tract, one can look north from the Woodbridge Greenway Trail to Sanford Road where there is a stone embankment just east of the Thomas Sanford house. It is thought that this location is where the world’s first friction matches were made.
This trail crosses a steep area and leads to the Bethany Farms Trail System.
This land is for passive recreation use only.
Due to raised boardwalk through swamp, this trail is not recommended for small children or pets.
